Constructed over a period of 7.5 years from 1609 to 1617, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque stands as a testament to the architectural brilliance of Sedefkar Mehmet Aga. Commissioned by Sultan Ahmed I, who became the 14th Sultan of the Ottomans at the young age of 14, this magnificent mosque was a labor of love for both the Sultan and Aga.
Despite being only 19 when he entrusted Aga with the task of constructing this grand mosque, Sultan Ahmed I personally engaged in its construction, working as a laborer. Sadly, his reign over the vast Ottoman Empire, spanning three continents, lasted merely 14 years before his untimely death at the age of 28.
The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is an architectural masterpiece, reflecting the genius of Sinan, one of history’s greatest architects. After joining the Palace’s department for inlaying mother-of-pearl and architecture in 1569-1570, Aga’s journey led him to work under Sinan’s guidance for 21 years, first as an apprentice and then as a master-builder. Following Sinan’s passing, Aga assumed the esteemed role of Chief Architect.
One of Aga’s notable early works as Chief Architect was the restoration of The Kaaba, known as “The House of Allah” in the Holy Qur’an. Additionally, he oversaw the installation of its renowned Golden Gutters
